The Glass Room - Simon Mawer

" 'Ever since Man came out of the cave he has been building caves around him,' he cried. 'Building caves!' But I wish to take Man out of his cave and float him in the air. I wish to give him a glass space to inhabit.' "

"It astonishes her how significant silence can be within the context of a piece of music."

"They are silences of foreboding, anticipatory echoes of the sounds that are yet to come."

".... I'd hardly include my husband amongst my friends, would I? My friends spend money; my husband makes it. The opportunity for a conflict of interest is evident."

"She smiles. This smile is particular. It starts from a downward turn of the mouth that is almost an expression of contempt, and it ends in warmth and promise. She leans towards his face and her tongue laps across his mouth, tasting herself. '[Never] is a word I am not entirely familiar with she says. 'If we listened to never we would never have done what we just did. And how would you like that?' "

"A house without people has no dimensions. It just is. An enclosed space, a box."
